Euro 2024: Germany qualify for last 16 with win over Hungary
Musiala and Gundogan on target as Germany secure progress
Hungary bow out of tournament despite spirited display
Germany secured their place in the last 16 of Euro 2024 with a 2-0 win over Hungary in Munich on Wednesday. Goals from Jamal Musiala and Ilkay Gundogan sealed the victory for the hosts, who have now won two of their three matches in Group A.
Hungary, who had beaten Germany 1-0 in the UEFA Nations League last year, started brightly and had the better of the chances in the first half. However, Germany came out stronger after the break and took the lead through Musiala in the 55th minute.
Gundogan doubled the lead 10 minutes later to put the game beyond Hungary's reach. Hungary continued to fight until the end but could not find a way back into the match.
Germany will now face England in their final group game on Monday, while Hungary will play France.
Conclusion
Germany's victory over Hungary was a hard-fought affair, but in the end, the hosts' quality shone through. Musiala and Gundogan were both excellent, and Germany will be confident of going all the way in this tournament. Hungary, meanwhile, can be proud of their performance, but they will now need to focus on qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
